Hello, Hollowers! I’m back with inspiration for The Hedgehog Hollow July 2019 box. We’re thrilled to collaborate with Sophia Caldwell again and to introduce four exclusive WOW! embossing powders. I’m using the butterfly stamps two ways today featuring embossing and alcohol markers on shimmer paper.

All the details to make these cards and a full reveal of the July 2019 Subscription Box are in the video below. As of writing this post, this box was still available.  Get yours before it sells out because once they’re gone, they’re gone for good.

Butterfly Stamps Two Ways

I stamped two panels using Stardream Metallic Quartz paper from Cutcardstock.com. This paper has a shimmer finish and since alcohol markers are translucent, the shimmer shows right through the coloring, perfect for butterfly wings! The photos do not do the shimmer and translucency justice.

I stamped one panel with clear embossing ink and one with NUVO Black Shadow Hybrid Ink. Plum Shift Craft and Coppertone Shift embossing powders were used for the butterflies. These powers are multi-colored and though the color creates a textured appearance, they melt smoothly even on these detailed butterflies.

Best practice when heat embossing on specialty papers, is to pre-heat your heat tool and use short bursts of heat. As soon as the powder starts to melt, remove the heat for a few seconds, and bring the heat back. This technique will prevent any warping of the paper.

Alcohol Markers on Shimer Paper

Today, I’m using Altenew Artist Markers in Sea Shores, Tropical Forrest, and Rose Petal. When coloring on shimmer paper, especially in small spaces, I find two color blends are best. I prefer high contrast which is so I used the lightest and darkest colors of each color family. The result is different than what you’d achieve on Neenah, almost like translucent stained glass.

Because the paper is coated, the alcohol ink stays wet longer, blends easily, and doesn’t require multiple coats. Try using a combination of flicks and dots or dabbing for different looks. If you normally color from light to dark, dark to light, try using dark first and then blending with the light marker.

Be cautious if you decided to color the embossed areas as it may damage your nibs. You could leave it uncolored or use a different coloring medium such as pencils as an alternative.

Backgrounds

For the stamped card, I drew a border with Zentangle® accents. I ink blended a dotted background onto the embossed panel with Shabby Shutters Distress Oxide and Altenew Moss Crisp Dye Ink.
