Essentials by Ellen Hutson New Release!
The Hedgehog Hollow is over the excited to share our video with you for the New Essentials by Ellen Hutson release. Ellen Hutson provided us some free products for this post, but all thoughts, opinions and ideas are our own.
Our absolute favorite crafting season is Christmas for so many reasons. Sharing a little bit of joy by doing what we love is an incredible feeling.
Card crafting allows you to send cheerful gifts as an artist all while cutting down on some of those expensive traditions. I can’t send all of my friends and family giant flat screen tv’s, but I can show them how much they each mean to me by delivering something homemade with high quality materials and products. So thank you Essentials by Ellen for all of your incredible products!
We’d like to start this blog off with a bang and provide you with a 10% discount off of Ellen Hutson products. The discount linked below expires 8/18/19 and excludes BCRF and Mama Elephant release in the last 30 days.
To get your coupon, click the link below and use the code: HHAlexFlorals
Our card we crafted turned out gorgeous while using some color popping steps.
Ok let’s get started!

Before we start with the Ranger Alcohol inks, we like to place a strip of Glad Press n’ Seal on top of our Tonic glass mat. Since the press n’ seal is leak proof, it makes for an easy clean up. If only we could press and seal our children’s rooms!
Be sure to use Yupo Paper for the ink because it’s acrylic paper, giving the ink an opportunity to move more naturally before settling into the paper. Start by plopping lots of blending solution to allow the ink to stay wet longer and for the colors to react with each other.
Quite a few request to perform this project with mineral paper have been sent in, so a review will be coming soon for our special Hollowers~
We created a Birthday Card and chose to stay away from Holiday colors on this project to show you just how well this Essentials by Ellet Hutson set works year round.
The Yupo ink colors we chose are: Dandelion, Patina, Turquoise and Lime Aid.
Time to dry your die!
Time to bust out your Rocket Air Blaster to move the colors around and create a muddled background. The air blaster also helps evaporate some of the blending solution. The more blending solution you use, the more ripple effects take place. Always be sure to work in a well ventilated area when using the blending solutions.
You can allow the Yupo ink to dry naturally or use a heating too if you use the heat gently. If you do use heat, I would use your Ranger heating tool rather than your Wagner tool. The Wagner tool is no hair dryer but it is a bit aggressive in forcing the colors away from your aim.
Feel free to add more ink if needed. Once your base is dry for your card base, you are ready for the next step.
One of my favorite parts about card making with Alcohol Inks with this Essentials by Ellen project is all designs are unique. No two homemade cards will be identical. We even added more color at this point and a stunningly pretty background was our result.
Once the base is dry, go ahead and remove the Glad Press n’ Seal. It’s a good idea to lay a kitchen paper towel beneath the card so alcohol ink won’t stain your table top if it seeps through.
Next place your base card on your MISTI stamp positioner. Sticky grid works great with stamp positioners because they can last you up to a year. We use it daily and it is just beginning to lose its stickiness after 7 months of place and pealing over and over again – so well worth the investment for your card crafting supplies.
The Mondo Amaryllis stamp was our weapon of choice because the design even fit sideways, allowing two cards for the price one! A simple tip when using alcohol ink is to make sure your ink pad is clean with blending solution so you don’t get any unwanted archival ink on your ink pad.
Ink your pad up well with your clear ink and stamp down. Press the stamp down well like your are trying to revive your beloved stamp with CPR. The outlining of the Mondo Amaryllis stamp should begin to show immediately. If you were generous when loading your stamp with ink, then good! You can get up to six uses with one stamp.
Clean you stamp with Archival Cleaner, Blending Solution or Isopropyl Alcohol for a crispy clean stamp ready for its next card crafting adventure.
Be sure to not allow your card to dry too long are you will have difficulty with you lift-ink process. Use a paper towel to pat the ink on you Essentials by Ellen card. Don’t, I repeat, DO NOT rub your ink or you will lose your Mondo Amaryllis impression. It may seem like your patting isn’t doing much, but you will see your impression reveal itself like a prom date walking down the stairs.
Now you can trim your card to fit your needed size. We cut it down to our typical size of 3.75″ x 5″.
Next we created our own background with the Rustic Woodgrain impression from our new Essentials by Ellen Hutson set. Picked Rasberries Distress Archival Ink is the color for our background card. A nice perk about the Archival inks is you can buy reinkers if you run low and don’t have to buy all new ink pads.
Now stamp your Rustic Woodgrain Impression from your Essentials by Ellen holiday stamp set on your Hero Hues Pink cardstock. What helps us choose our colors is our handy dandy color wheel to help pair colors like fine wines with dinner.
Archival inks can be used on so many surfaces such as non-porous, Yupo paper, t shirts with a heat set, and much much more. You will find that red and pink dies to stain the photopolymer stamps. No worries because your stamps won’t be damaged even if they are rocking a red or pink tint. Cut your Rustic Woodgrain card to about 5″ x 4″ so the border sticks out a little further than our first piece – the background card.
Use double sided tape to stick your background card to your card base, but don’t use double sided tape for your Yupo cards. We always use Gina K. Connect Glue because we find it is one of the only glues that sticks Yupo well and stays stuck!
Now you can add extra sentiments like we did with “Happy Birthday” and some shimmering gems.
