Hi, y’all, Susan from Susan Makes. I am SO excited to be guest designing for Hedgehog Hollow this month using Hedgehog Hollow’s September 2020 Dead of the Dead Box! Today, I will be teaching you how to make this charming gatefold magic iris card. We will be making the magic iris without the use of any specialized dies! Ready to learn how I made this card? Check out the video below:
Be sure to watch the video to see the technique in action! If for some reason, the video is missing, you can view it on my YouTube Channel.
Keep your eyes open this month, as I will be featuring several cards made using this adorable Day of the Dead Box! For this sweet little anniversary card, I used their Dia De Los Muertos stamp set included in this month’s box. Look at this adorable sugar skull couple!
I have wanted to make a magic iris card for a while, but I couldn’t afford to buy the die set to make them. A couple of weeks ago, I ran across a tutorial on making your own without dies, and I just had to give it a try. I decided to create the magic iris inside a gatefold card to make it extra fun.
How to Make a Magic Iris Card
I stamped out the sugar skull couple and colored them in with my alcohol markers. I added some little details using a white Uni-ball Signo pen and a couple of different Nuvo Crystal Drops. I use the Metallic Pale Gold Crystal Drops on the buttons on his jacket. I then added Ivory Seashell Christal Drops to add some details to her dress.
I created a belly band to go around the card. I used sentiments from the Day of the Dead Words Stamp Set from the September Box. I used a metallic platinum embossing powder to create the belly band sentiment. The paper flowers have been in my craft room for what seems forever. I use them all the time, but I never manage to use them up (I think they are breeding in the embellishment drawer!). I think they are a lovely accent with the sugar skull couple. I use the same Metallic Pale Gold Crystal Drops on the flowers’ center to add a bit more shine and texture.
I thought this pretty paper from the Botanical Garden paper collection from Carta Bella Paper Company was a perfect match for this card. Such pretty papers in this 6×6 paper pad! Overall, I think that this gatefold magic iris card turned out so adorable! Hedgehog Hollow’s September 2020 Day of the Dead Box is an absolute winner! I can’t wait to see what everyone else creates with it!
